Gregor Townsend has made three changes to his wider 41-man training squad ahead of their Autumn Nations Series Test against Argentina on Sunday, with winger Arron Reed ruled out of the rest of the campaign.

The Sale Sharks star, who has suffered a quad injury, has been involved with the wider group throughout this month’s internationals, but is yet to add to his tally of four caps after missing out on selection against the USA and All Blacks.

Scotland come into Sunday’s Test looking for an immediate return to the winning column, following an agonising 25-17 defeat to New Zealand last time out.

Townsend makes changes to Scotland squad

He is not alone in withdrawing from Townsend’s squad, either, with two-time British and Irish Lions tourist Rory Sutherland and Murphy Walker also not included.

Sutherland will miss their upcoming date with Los Pumas through concussion, while Walker will return to club side Glasgow Warriors.

The pair are replaced by Glasgow’s Jamie Bhatti and returning Leicester Tigers tighthead Will Hurd, who comes back after recovering from a shoulder issue.

Fellow front-rower Zander Fagerson remains with the Scotland squad, as he continues his return to fitness.

Elsewhere, Finn Russell is also named in the initial training squad after coming off with an injury in the latter stages against the All Blacks, and will be assessed in training this week.

“His knee was the initial injury,” head coach Townsend told BBC Sport of Russell. “I thought he was outstanding even though he had that knee strain.

“The reason we took him off was because he had an ankle (issue) too, so there were two injuries he was carrying.

“He doesn’t think it’ll be serious, but it’s obviously too early to say.”
