A major commuter rail route through Birmingham has been partially suspended with the delays expected to continue throughout tonight’s rush hour.

The Cross City Line south was suspended at lunchtime today, Tuesday, November 11 due to a ‘signalling fault’.

As well as routes from the city centre to Bromsgrove and Redditch, the fault was also affecting West Midlands Railway services to Hereford.

The train firm posted on X shortly before 1pm: “Cross City South suspended. Due to a signal fault, services between Birmingham New Street & Bromsgrove/Redditch will be suspended.

“Rail replacement is being ordered and ticket acceptance is being ordered.”

The firm posted on its website: “There is a problem near University, which has been caused by a signalling issue, engineers are on site, however the issue is not expected to be resolved until 20:00.

“Trains services running through the area will be cancelled.

“We expect our train service to be back to normal by 21:00.”

Network Rail’s Birmingham New Street Station account posted: “We are on site to fix the signalling issue affecting all services along the Cross City south line between Birmingham and Redditch/Bromsgrove.

“Rail replacement buses are in place between Longbridge and Bromsgrove/Redditch.”

Rail tickets were being accepted on National Express West Midlands services 11A, 11C, 18, 23, 24, 45, 47, 48, 49, 61, 63, 80, X20, X21 and X22.
