A charity worker is walking 1,000km across Spain to raise £5,000 for vulnerable young people.

Andy Evans, who is the food sourcing officer for the Didcot based charity South Oxfordshire Food and Education Alliance (SOFEA), started his journey on April 7, to fund a full education programme for a young person at the non-profit.

SOFEA was founded in 2013 to support vulnerable people, many of whom face emotional and behavioural challenges.

The charity also redistributes surplus food across the Thames Valley in partnership with FareShare.

Mr Evans started the challenge in September 2024 but had to stop after fracturing two ribs.

Now fully recovered, he will resume his journey in Villafranca Montes de Oca, finishing on the Atlantic coast in Finisterre.

By the end of his journey, he will have climbed twice the height of Mount Everest.

Mr Evans said: “The trip ahead prompts a range of moods and emotions within me.

“After having been hospitalised on my last outing, I am feeling more anxious than I normally would about the terrain ahead, about where I’ll be able to find accommodation and about what the weather might have in wait for me.

“However, the prospect of a big adventure really excites me too.

“I’m itching to start.”

SOFEA operates in the South Midlands and Thames Valley areas, providing education, employability, and wellbeing programmes for vulnerable young people.
