After Tuesday night’s Vertu Trophy game against Plymouth Argyle at the Memorial Stadium, Bristol Rovers are back on the road to face Accrington Stanley in League Two. Darrell Clarke’s side will be looking to end a five-match losing streak in the league, and build on last week’s improved performance against Gillingham.

Ahead of the long trip to the Wham Stadium, we spoke to the Official Accrington Stanley Supporters Trust (OASST) to discuss tips for away fans making the visit to the ground.

Typically, away supporters are housed in the Eric Whalley Stand, which is all seating. Half the stand is made available, depending on the number of visiting fans attending. For large away followings, for example, when Tranmere Rovers travel to the Wham Stadium, the open terrace behind the goal is made available for away supporters.

In terms of getting to the game, the OASST provided the following advice for fans travelling to the game by car: “There is plenty of free street parking within a few minutes walk of the ground. The residential area across Whalley Road from the ground is usually popular.”

They added: “The [train] station is about a 20 minute walk to the ground, passing a couple of pubs and food outlets.”

While there are no designated away pubs, there are a few spots near the ground, which welcome both sets of supporters. The OASST said: “We actually welcome away supporters into our Coleys fans bar at the stadium, opens from 12 noon with large screens and food / drink. It is very popular and recommended by all our visiting supporters. The Crown close to the ground is also used by many fans, both home and away.”

Speaking to Peter Leatham, who is Chairman of the OASST, about the hosts’ season so far, he said: “A usual mixed bag as we bed in signings and loan players. The 4-0 demolition of Swindon showed the extend of the potential however we have been consistently inconsistent and finding a level is the key.”

John Doolan’s side picked up an impressive 3-3 draw away at Chesterfield on Saturday, with Tyler Walton scoring a brace and Charlie Caton scoring the equaliser in the 75th minute. The hosts had the chance to win the game in the 94th minute, but Lee Bonis missed from the spot to give Accrington a crucial point on the road.

Walton was one of the players that Leatham picked out as someone that Rovers fans should be worried about ahead of Saturday’s game. He said: “The evergreen Paddy Madden is now finding his feet and it’s good to welcome back both Tyler Walton & Shaun Whalley after injuries. Everton loanee Isaac Heath is a handful going forwards.”

Stanley know that a win on Saturday would lift them above the Gas in the League Two table after 16 games. Their recent 4-0 victory against promotion-contenders Swindon Town at the Wham Stadium highlights how dangerous they are, highlighting the difficulty of the task ahead for Clarke’s side.
