Celtic’s striker situation has been an interesting talking point in 2025.

The domino started when Kyogo Furuhashi surprisingly decided to leave last January, and that left Celtic in a spot of bother.

In a short space of time, and with huge Champions League games coming up, the champions of Scotland needed to act, and several names were tipped to come in.

One of them included then-West Ham United striker Danny Ings, who had worked under Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool, and his contract at the London Stadium was due to expire in less than six months.

It’s fair to say that Celtic have dodged a bullet with this one, as the Patrick Bamford news on Thursday has confirmed.

In the summer, Ings moved to Sheffield United after they sacked Chris Wilder following their play-off final defeat to Sunderland.

A disastrous start to the season saw the Blades sack Ruben Selles and bring back Wilder, who has continued to struggle and he has opted to bring in Bamford on a free transfer following his exit from Leeds United.

Despite having a man of Ings’ experience on board, Wilder stated only a few weeks ago, ‘we have to play a certain way because we don’t have a number nine.’

That’s also why Bamford has come in, with the Yorkshire club announcing it on Thursday, as it further proves that Celtic were right not to push for Ings.

How has Danny Ings fared after being linked with Celtic?

The issue with Ings is that the 33-year-old has spent more time on the bench than on the pitch in recent years, and 2025 has been a disaster for him.

Ings hasn’t scored a goal in 2025, including for West Ham and his nine matches for Sheffield United in England’s second-tier this season.

The former England international started his side’s goalless draw against Queens Park Rangers last time out, playing 90 minutes, and it’s probably the last time he will do that, now that Bamford is in the building.
