James Beadle has returned to Birmingham City after picking up an injury on international duty with England under-21s.

The goalkeeper was due to play for England in their match against Republic of Ireland at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park on Friday night but has now been withdrawn.

A short statement from the England set-up reads: “Goalkeeper Elyh Harrison and forward Sam Amo-Ameyaw have received their maiden England MU21 call ups.

“Harrison, on loan at Shrewsbury Town from Manchester United, and Strasbourg’s Amo-Ameyaw have linked up with Lee Carsley’s squad at St. George’s Park ahead of the 2027 UEFA U21 EURO qualifiers against Republic of Ireland and Slovakia.

“The pair, who were originally included in the England MU20 squad, replace Birmingham City’s James Beadle and Leicester City’s Ben Nelson who have withdrawn through injury.”

Beadle has impressed in goal for Blues since replacing Ryan Allsop six weeks ago.

The 21-year-old had to bide his time after joining on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer but has now kept goal for seven straight Championship games.

Beadle kept clean sheets in victories over Preston, Portsmouth and Millwall to help Blues climb to 11th in the table at the third international break of the season.

Blues lost Paik Seung-ho to a shoulder injury in their last game against Middlesbrough and already have Ethan Laird, Scott Wright and Lee Buchanan on the sidelines.

Iceland international Willum Willumsson has recently stepped up his recovery after two months out.
