A new Trafford-based charity, the Future of Manufacturing Foundation, has officially launched to help local people gain the confidence, skills and inspiration they need to build better futures in the UK’s modern manufacturing and technology sectors.
Founded by professionals with decades of experience across industry, education and community development, the Foundation is being driven by people who care deeply about the future of manufacturing and who understand first-hand the barriers that prevent local residents from reaching their potential.
The Foundation will work with leading manufacturers, housing associations, training providers, and employers across Greater Manchester to create accessible, community-based opportunities that help people move closer to work, training or further education.
“This charity is being led by people who know the sector and care about people,” said Mark Leeson, Chair of Trustees. “We’ve seen both the potential and the challenges the shortage of skills in manufacturing, and the lack of confidence and opportunities faced by people who want to join it. The Foundation exists to bring those two sides together.”
The organisation aims to make manufacturing more visible, inclusive and inspiring showing that the sector is not just about factories and machinery, but about innovation, creativity and purpose.
Catherine Hook, Trustee, added: “We want to change perceptions. Manufacturing today is digital, design-led and full of opportunity. But many people don’t see themselves as part of it especially if they’ve been out of education or work for a while. We’re here to change that.”
Working with local partners including housing associations and community organisations, the Foundation will deliver workshops, mentoring and engagement activities that help people build confidence, discover new skills, and connect with real industry pathways.
Christopher Merriman, Trustee, said: “This is about doing things differently. We’re creating local, practical ways for people to get involved and for employers to give back. It’s about opening doors and showing people what’s possible.”
The Future of Manufacturing Foundation is inviting local employers, educators, funders and community partners to join its mission to inspire the next generation and strengthen the UK’s industrial future.
