The Met Office has upgraded its weather warning from yellow to amber with Storm Claudia bringing a ‘danger to life’ in Birmingham.

Heavy rain is expected to lead to further deep floodwater and disruption tomorrow, Friday, November 14.

The amber warning is in place from noon until midnight.

Storm Claudia will bring rain that will become persistent and heavy during Friday.

Between 40-60 mm of rain is expected widely across this region with some places seeing around 80 mm.

In a forecast for the West Midlands, the Met Office said: “Today: Early morning mist and fog will soon lift, leaving a much drier and brighter day for all. Plenty of sunny spells into the afternoon, though a few light showers may pop up across the north. Lighter winds, and feeling mild. Maximum temperature 15C.

“Tonight: Increasingly cloudy this evening, with rain moving in from the south overnight, this persistent and sometimes heavy. Becoming rather windy too, and feeling chillier than recent nights. Minimum temperature 5C.

“Friday: Widely wet with spells of rain turning persistent and heavy for all, bringing a risk of flooding and challenging driving conditions.

“Very windy too, with gales possible over the hills. Maximum temperature 11C.

“Outlook for Saturday to Monday: Becoming more settled over the weekend. Still rather cloudy with a few light showers on Saturday, but more widely dry on Sunday and Monday. Feeling colder, especially during the nights.”

What should I expect from Storm Claudia?

  • Fast flowing or deep floodwater is likely, causing danger to life
  • Homes and businesses are likely to be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
  • Spray and flooding leading to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • A good chance some communities will be cut off by flooded roads
  • Delays and some cancellations to train and bus services are likely
  • Power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses possible
