Millions of drivers have been told to “try” to fill their tanks with fuel BEFORE midday tomorrow. An amber alert has been issued by the Met Office for the coming day, at 12noon on Friday, with Storm Claudia set to wreak havoc across the country.

Ahead of the amber alert, the RAC has guidance for driving in adverse weather and said: “Check that your windscreen wiper blades are fully functional. If both front and back blades are not up to scratch, get them replaced.

“On an older vehicle, it might be advisable to upgrade to so-called ‘aero’ wipers, which are more effective at removing water from the windscreen, particularly at speed.

“Try to fill up with fuel before you travel, as getting stuck in traffic will increase your fuel consumption – Remember, with the lights, heater and wipers switched on, your fuel economy will be reduced even further.”

Storm Claudia, named by the Spanish Meteorological Service due to ongoing impacts in Canary Islands, has resulted in amber rain warnings in southern and central parts of England and Wales.

Wider yellow warnings have also been issued for rain and wind, in what will be a very wet day for England and Wales. Rain will gradually spread further north through the warning areas on Friday and into the early hours of Saturday morning.

A BBC Weather forecast explains: “Tomorrow, windy and wet across the south, with heavy and locally torrential rain. Mostly dry in the north, with sunny spells. Scattered showers in coastal northern and eastern Scotland.”

And the outlook for Saturday to Monday adds: “Cloudy with patchy rain lingering over England and Wales on Saturday. Brighter in Northern Ireland and west Scotland, a few clouds in the east and far north of Scotland. Sunday and Monday look to see some showers drift into eastwards and northward-facing coasts under a broadly northerly flow.

“Mostly dry with sunny spells elsewhere. Trending colder.”
