Sheffield Wednesday have been given permission by the EFL to sign two free agents to bolster their squad, reports The Star.

Sheffield Wednesday’s administrators have made a major breakthrough in their bid for financial stability, paying off several outstanding debts and seeing FIFA-imposed transfer restrictions lifted. The progress marks a significant step forward as the club looks to recover from recent turmoil.

The debts were cleared using funds generated by a surge in fan support, with increased attendances at Hillsborough and strong sales in the club shop. This development follows Dejphon Chansiri’s decision to place the club into administration, ending his 10-year reign and giving supporters hope that administrator Kris Wigfield can soon secure a new buyer.

Wednesday have now been handed another major boost as the EFL have granted them permission to sign free agents. SWFC will now be able to sign two free agents to fill out their squad, according to The Star.

It’s understood that the argument for allowing new signings focused on player welfare during the demanding run of fixtures ahead. Yan Valery and Sean Fusire are due to leave for the African Cup of Nations next month.

Who may Sheffield Wednesday’s two free agent signings be?

Restrictions imposed on Sheffield Wednesday prevented them from signing free agents over the summer. Experienced players such as Liam Cooper and Duncan Watmore were reportedly close to agreeing deals before the restrictions.

Cooper is a name that will not go away in regard to SWFC. The former Leeds United man looks very likely to join Sheffield Wednesday, with Henrik Pedersen confirming he is on the club’s shortlist.

As for Watmore, he is still an option as he remains a free agent after his release from Millwall. He would be a versatile and experienced option for SWFC, with the former Sunderland man able to play all across the front three.

The latest name to arise in terms of free agents is defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah. He has been a free agent since June 2024 and is able to play across the back-four and in midfield.

Sheffield Wednesday are prepared for ownership change

SWFC have several parties looking to take over the club. Should they find a suitable owner, that would open the door for the club to make several more signings once restrictions are fully lifted.

Sheffield Wednesday could soon have new owners, with former Newcastle United chief Mike Ashley among those interested following Dejphon Chansiri’s decision to place the club into administration. There are believed to be around 40 realistic prospective buyers assessing the situation.

If caretaker boss Pedersen can bring in free agents and lift the Owls into positive points, the club will become an even more appealing option for those considering a takeover.
