There are delays of at least two hours on the M5 in Bristol as a series of unfortunate events hit motorway drivers this afternoon.

A crash, an infrastructure defect, and flooding have all affected conditions on the motorway, leaving motorists stuck in huge queues.

Two lanes have been closed northbound between junctions 20 and 19 this afternoon (Friday, November 14).

National Highways has warned of extensive delays on the motorway and advised drivers to avoid the area.

Highways said: “Traffic has been released on #M5 #Somerset northbound between J20 ( #Clevedon ) & J19 ( #Portishead ) following a collision.

“2 (of 3) lanes remain closed between J20 & J19 for an infrastructure defect. Service providers are in attendance. Please allow extra time for your journey.

“Severe delays of 140 minutes on approach, please allow extra time for your journey.”

Traffic monitor Inrix reports: “Severe delays and two lanes closed due to emergency repairs on M5 Northbound from J20 B3133 Ettlingen Way (Clevedon) to J19 A369 Martcombe Road (Portishead).

“Congestion to before J21 (Weston Super Mare). Delays aren’t helped after the road was briefly blocked for recovery of an accident which has now been cleared.”

There are also reports of flooding southbound on the motorway.
