Vitor Matos has shot up the list of bookies’ favourites to take over at Swansea City.

Matos is currently head coach at Portuguese side Maritimo, whom he took over back in June.

It’s his first-ever head coach role, having previously worked under Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

His odds on taking over at the Swans have been slashed in the last 24 hours or so, but there’s currently no indication at this stage that he is a genuine contender.

Indeed, it’s understood Kim Hellberg remains the club’s first choice to succeed Alan Sheehan, who was sacked following the 4-1 defeat to Ipswich Town before the international break.

Talks with the current Hammarby boss have taken place over the last few days, but are yet to reach a resolution, with sources in Sweden stressing that an agreement with City is still some way off.

Hellberg has been linked with vacancies elsewhere, including Championship rivals Norwich City, who recently parted company with Liam Manning after a poor start to the season.

But, at the time of writing, Hellberg hasn’t yet spoken to the Canaries over taking over, and there’s a feeling Norwich will likely look elsewhere.

Nevertheless, there is believed to be big interest in the Swede, although it’s Swansea who have seemingly made the most concrete approach.

Hammarby have also made moves over the last few weeks to try to tie Hellberg down to a new deal, but it remains to be seen whether he will entertain their advances.

Odds in full

Kim Hellberg 1/2

Vitor Matos 4/1
