Sheffield Wednesday have been backed to thrive under new ownership by former player Guy Branston.

Sheffield Wednesday are in the market for new owners. SWFC have recently entered administration following Dejphon Chansiri‘s controversial spell in charge at Hillsborough.

The Owls have endured a tough start to the Championship season and have won only one of their first 15 fixtures. They are inside the drop zone along with Norwich City and rivals Sheffield United.

Ex-defender Branston, who also had spells with the likes of Leicester City, Rotherham United and Peterborough United, has delivered his verdict on the South Yorkshire outfit, as per the Football League Paper (16.11.25, page 27): “In the right hands, that club is ready for lift off. Not just because it’s got the history and the fanbase but because it’s a brilliant story waiting to be told.

“You’ve got the glorious past, the fall from grace, all the hardships under Chansiri and the club nearly going to the wall. Then you’ve got new owners coming in and trying to take them back to the Premier League after a quarter of a century. Attach a few celebrity directors and that’s something people all over the world would want to watch.”

Sheffield Wednesday latest update

Sheffield Wednesday’s administrators are trying to find the right ownership group. SWFC supporters are having to be patient.

On the pitch, it has been a tricky past few months for the Owls. Their squad is lacking depth and they are crying out for some reinforcements this winter.

Henrik Pedersen was picked as their head coach in the summer after Danny Rohl’s exit. Prior to his appointment, he worked as part of Rohl’s backroom staff team along with Chris Powell before landing the full-time position.

Sheffield Wednesday have struggled for results though due to their threadbare options. Their bench is usually packed with youngsters and they could do with some new faces if possible over the coming weeks and months.

What now for Sheffield Wednesday?

Sheffield Wednesday have been out of the Premier League for too long and have the fanbase and catchment area to make a strong push for the top flight when their new era begins. SWFC are back in action after the international break against Sheffield United at home.

The Owls lost 3-1 away at Southampton last time out. Manchester United loanee Harry Amass got their goal against the Saints down in Hampshire but they weren’t able to get anything from the game anymore.

Sheffield Wednesday saw a host of key players head of the exit door before this campaign began including Josh Windass, Anthony Musaba and Djeidi Gassama, among others, that decimated their ranks. They were able to bring in only Amass and goalkeeper Ethan Horvath in the end, whilst Joe Lumley arrived more recently on an emergency deal before heading back to Bristol City.

Pedersen’s men will be lacking confidence, despite their battling performances. They need help and will need to be at their best if they are to get anything against Sheffield United at the weekend.
