A 17 year old boy has been arrested after a fight at Sheffield College earlier today said to have involved knives.

Police were called to the campus on Granville Road at 1:07pm after an altercation involving students, one of whom was allegedly seen with a blade.

The teenager was later detained on Alderson Road, some distance away from the college, on suspicion of affray and possession of a bladed article.

No injuries have been reported and students left the school as normal this afternoon.

South Yorkshire Police Chief Inspector Katie Rowland-Wilson said:

“We understand news of this incident will cause considerable concern, particularly among parents and guardians.

“I want to make it clear that, although we are in the early stages of our enquiries, we have a boy in custody and we remain on scene to engage with the college community and offer our reassurances.

“We are now working to understand the full circumstances of what happened and we will remain in the area on our regular patrols.

“I’d encourage anyone who has concerns to speak to an officer when you see them and would urge anyone with information which could help our enquiries to report it to us.”

Anyone with information is being urged to contact officers on 101.
