Two men have been arrested in connection with the attempted murder of Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell.
Mr Caldwell was off duty when he was shot several times at a sports complex after coaching a youth football team in Omagh, Co Tyrone.
The New IRA has claimed responsibility for the attack which took place in February 2023.
The PSNI has said: “Detectives investigating the attempted murder of Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell in Omagh in February 2023 have made two arrests.
“Two men – aged 37 and 73 – were arrested in the Ardboe area and were detained under the Terrorism Act this evening, Tuesday, 18 November.”
They have been taken to Musgrave Serious Crime Suite for questioning.
Mr Caldwell has since retired from the PSNI on medical grounds.
A number of people have previously appeared in court charged with offences linked to the shooting attack.
Mr Caldwell was awarded the King’s Police Medal is awarded for distinguished service in the police force.
He was presented with the medal by the Princess Royal at Buckingham Palace in November 2024.
“I’m feeling very happy, feel very privileged, feel very honoured to be – firstly nominated – and then to receive such a very nice medal from the King,” he told PA news agency at the time.
