A teenager has been arrested after a fight broke out among Sheffield students today during which a boy is said to have pulled out a knife.
Police were called to the fight at the City Campus of Sheffield College in Granville Road at 1.07pm today (Tuesday, November 18). It was reported a student had pulled a knife out during the fight. A 17-year-old boy was subsequently arrested in Alderson Road on suspicion of affray and possession of a bladed article, a South Yorkshire Police statement confirmed.
The boy has been suspended by the college pending further investigation. No injuries were reported and students left Sheffield College as normal in the afternoon.
Chief Inspector Katie Rowland-Wilson said: “We understand news of this incident will cause considerable concern, particularly among parents and guardians. I want to make it clear that, although we are in the early stages of our enquiries, we have a boy in custody and we remain on scene to engage with the college community and offer our reassurances.
“We are now working to understand the full circumstances of what happened and we will remain in the area on our regular patrols. I’d encourage anyone who has concerns to speak to an officer when you see them and would urge anyone with information which could help our enquiries to report it to us.”
It comes as Sheffield reels from the murder of Harvey Willgoose at All Saints Catholic High School earlier this year. Harvey, 15, was stabbed and killed by Mohammed Khan, also 15, at lunchtime.
A spokeserpson for Sheffield College said: “We are aware of an incident at City Campus today which allegedly involved a knife. South Yorkshire Police were contacted and arrived quickly to deal with the incident. We can confirm that there were no injuries.
“The safety of our students and staff is our utmost priority. We have high expectations of our students. Where behaviour falls short of those expectations, we will take swift action to address it and are supporting South Yorkshire Police with their investigation. The student involved has been suspended pending further investigation.”
