Syracuse, N.Y. – The installation of IKEA’s new sign at Destiny USA was delayed slightly Wednesday morning. The truck carrying it was too large to go under the Park Street bridge, a low overhang just outside of the mall known to disrupt traffic and deliveries.
Welcome to Syracuse, IKEA.
Yet despite the small hiccup, IKEA is ready to welcome Syracuse customers. And even though it’s smaller than traditional IKEAs, but it’s just as eye-popping.
More than 5,500 items are displayed in the new store at Destiny USA, which opens Friday at 10 a.m. Another 3,000 products can be purchased at the store and taken home.
“Having a smaller store with this new format lets us get to Central New York quicker so we can build these stores quickly,” said John Spence, manager of the Syracuse store.

Smaller and larger furniture can be ordered and delivered to the customer’s house, or picked up at the store.
Excitement about the new store has been building since July, when IKEA first announced it would open at Destiny USA. The store is located in the former At Home store, which is more than 80,000 square feet.
Syracuse’s mini-IKEA has 75 smaller furniture items available for immediate pickup. There is no warehouse section as in the larger stand-alone stores near Toronto, Boston and New York City. But shoppers can still order items from 12 designed showrooms displaying products. Larger IKEAs have about 56 rooms.
The store layout leads you through each of the 12 rooms. “The IKEA journey is designed very strategically, so customers have the opportunity to see everything,” Spence said.

The store has fully furnished bedroom, living room and kitchen areas. There’s a workspace area, plus kitchen and bathroom items, textiles, mattresses, rugs, plants and more for sale. A children’s section is filled with stuffed animals, tents and gym mats.
The Syracuse IKEA has a cafe, though smaller when compared with its larger warehouse stores. It still features meatballs, plant (non-meat) balls, hot dogs, veggie dogs and cinnamon rolls.
The location will be the third IKEA in New York, joining Long Island and Brooklyn. It’s one of about 50 smaller stores IKEA has opened to make the products more accessible to more people.
The store also has an As-Is department that sells discontinued items and “gently used” products. And it will have a central planning area for designing kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms.
The store has about 45 employees.
The store’s grand opening starts at 9:45 a.m. Friday. Customers can begin lining up at 7 a.m.
