Police were called by the fire service to Hardrow Road, Leeds at 9.34am yesterday (November 20) to a report of an ongoing fire affecting two adjacent properties.
Officers attended the scene at which two people, a woman from the upper maisonette flat and a man from the lower one, were reported to have suffered very serious injuries.
Sadly it was confirmed the man, believed to be in his 60s, had died.
The woman, 68, was taken to hospital where she is described as in a very poorly but stable condition.
Detective Inspector Dan Ridgeway of Leeds District CID, said: “This has clearly been a very serious and tragic incident in which a man has lost his life.
“Initial enquiries into the cause of the fire are underway with colleagues from the fire service and emergency services remain on scene.”
