A key Bristol A-road will be partially closed due to urgent gas works starting this weekend. Brislington Hill, which is part of the busy A4 Bath Road, will be shut on one side from Sunday, November 23.

Wales & West Utilities will be carrying out essential work on gas pipes there and estimates that the repair works should be completed by December 1.

The utilities company said the work is necessary to make an important repair due to a gas leak, and said it has worked with Bristol City Council to agree the roadworks.

The utility company added that there is no risk to the public, but it’s important that the works are carried out now to stop further leaks whilst also ensuring gas supplies are fit now, and for the future.

During the project, it has been agreed that one side of the Brislington Hill dual carriageway will be closed to traffic travelling out of Bristol. Motorists will be routed onto the other side of the carriageway, creating two single lanes of traffic.

A HGV diversion route will be signposted, and a bus suspension at a bus stop at the Concourse on Brislington Hill will be in place. Local buses are expected to run as normal.

Motorists and HGV drivers are advised to allow sufficient travel time during this period and to observe signage during the works to keep the public and those working on site safe.

Wales & West Utilities Shaun Wynes is managing this gas pipe upgrade work and said: “We have a gas leak on the network that needs to be addressed as soon as possible, and have worked with the Council Highways to plan the works accordingly. We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.

“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of this community. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.

“This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport green gases in the future. We would like to thank the local community and motorists for their patience while we complete these urgent works.”
