A gorgeous market town has been named as the UK’s most perfect – and it is located just 30 minutes outside of London. Many market towns have stood the test of time throughout the centuries, remaining as charming and quaint as ever, making them lovely places to visit and escape the hustle and bustle of city life.
What makes a great market town are often its range of independent shops, things to do, green space and transport links, to name just a few factors. After a 30-minute drive outside of London, you will find Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire. Although this was recently named the most expensive place for first-time buyers trying to get onto the property ladder, it was named by The Telegraph as the most perfect market town in all of the UK. But what makes it so?
The publication highlighted pubs, the “attractive high street” and the various dining options in the town were some of the market town’s major draws.
Beaconsfield is perfect for those working in London but who want to be close to nature. With the British capital to the east, there is the Chilterns National Landscape to the west, offering residents excellent opportunities for hiking and spending time in nature.
When it comes to pubs, one of the most beloved ones in the town is Royal Standard, which is a historic institution for many locals.
The Telegraph writes: “Beaconsfield’s Royal Standard is one of the country’s most venerable pubs, a place of well-worn flagstones that has been serving for 900 years.
“It’s said the Candle Room is haunted by a Cavalier, and Civil War drumbeats echo in the car park.”
Other than The Standard, there are other visit-worthy pubs in Beaconsfield.
They include The Beach House, The White Horse and The Three Horseshoes. There are also excellent restaurants in Beaconsfield, including the Michelin-recommended The Greyhound.
Meanwhile, Beaconsfield’s high street is full of gems. There are independent shops such as Mira, Repertoire and Benedict’s Store.
If you are planning a day-trip or even a full weekend visit to Beaconsfield, there is plenty to keep you occupied. There is the Bekonscot Model Village and Railway, which makes for a fun afternoon for visitors of all ages.
Other highlights of Beaconsfield include the home of historic author and philosopher G. K. Chesterton, which will be a thrill for lovers of English literature. You can also visit The Mayflower Barn, which offers the opportunity to learn about the unique history of the area.
For nature lovers, there is plenty of woodland and green space close to Beaconsfield. Prime examples of this include Penn Wood and Farm Wood.
