A Plymouth woman has started a seafood business in Britain’s Ocean City which is already receiving waves of five-star reviews.

Roxy Roxy launched the Mermaid Boil recently as pop-up business which can be found in various venues across Plymouth.

It specialises in New Orleans-style seafood boils: a one-pot meal containing a variety of seafood, such as shrimp and lobster, with vegetables such as sweet corn and potatoes.

The Mermaid Boil has a new regular spot at the Steel Brew micro-brewery and bar in the Royal William Yard. It will be there tomorrow, November 24.

On December 3, the Mermaid Boil will surface at the Capital DC tiki bar and lounge at Derrys Cross.

And on December 11 it can be found on the boil at the Lounge public house in Stoke.

Roxy told PlymouthLive: “I have launched my own catering business a few months ago called the Mermaid Boil. We specialise in making seafood boils.

“We started in July and have gone from strength to strength. We pop up in different venues around Plymouth. Our venues have included the Lugger (in Devonport) where we started out.”

On the Mermaid Boil website, Roxy wrote: “We’ve brought a taste of New Orleans straight to Plymouth with our one-of-a-kind seafood boil.

“Big flavours, messy hands and good vibes. Gather your friends, crack into fresh seafood and enjoy a feast that’s as fun as it is delicious.”

The Mermaid Boil has already delighted foodies, with some exceptional reviews.

One five-star reviewer called the food “scrumptious” and said: “Me and my girlfriend went for our one-year anniversary and we were not disappointed. It was so delicious, we were so impressed, and the staff were lovely. Thank you.”

Another said that Plymouth had been crying out for a “delicious seafood boil” and said: “Our party of four thoroughly enjoyed this.

“The food was fresh and flavourful. A few components were missing but this was corrected swiftly and without fuss, the allergy of one guest was also handled with care too.

“We felt Steel Brew was the perfect location, clean, spacious, nice bar and plentiful parking, previous locations sadly didn’t suit us so we jumped on this when we saw Royal William Yard as an option.

“We hope to see the Mermaid Boil pops up in Plymstock or Plympton in the future, we will definitely be back.”

And another reviewer called the food “amazing” and said: “Wow! What can I say? A real show stopper, would recommend to anyone who loves sea food. The type of thing Plymouth has needed for a long time.”

A diner who tried the food when the Mermaid Boil was at the Lounge said: “This was a first for both me and my dad.

“The experience was amazing from start to finish and the staff were amazing too. The gloves and apron are a must, which we have never used before to eat. The food was top notch and we would do it again in a heartbeat.”

Another reviewer used the Spanish word “buenisimo” – meaning “great”. They said: “Lovely lovely dish, enjoyed getting messy and eating, made it taste so good.”
