I’m a Celebrity campmates have been forced to evacuate camp as show bosses had to implement an emergency plan and urgently shelter the celebrities after hailstones and lightning were caused by a storm.

The evacuation comes after The Queensland Bureau of Meteorology had earlier issued a warning of what was described as a “very dangerous storm” forecast to hit the area. The weather agency warned the thunderstorm was producing “large to giant hailstones, damaging and destructive winds and heavy rainfall causing flash flooding.”

After the dramatic evacuation, the celebrities were taken to the Bush Telegraph, where they waited for over an hour as the storm passed camp.

According to the Mirror, insiders said the camp was left “drenched” and that filming was delayed by up to three hours. The campfire was used to dry the possessions of the campmates as everything had been hit with the intense rainfall.

A show source said: “Our health and safety weather contingencies kicked in and we evacuated the celebrities immediately to the Bush Telegraph until the storm passed and it was safe to return to camp.”

Bosses have highly advanced weather tracking systems where they can monitor storms. Last year was also affected with the camp being hit by record rainfall and suffering flooding. It was similarly evacuated at one point.

An insider said: “The Bush Telegraph is tiny but the only place where the campmates can be evacuated too. With all twelve contestants in there, it would have been very, very uncomfortable. Plus they were all drenched. It couldn’t have got any worse.”

Last year campmate Melvin Odoom told the Mirror he was on the brink of walking out of the show because of the weather. When asked if he considered quitting, he confessed: “Yes, because I found it difficult, and I thought the finish line seemed quite far away.”

He added: “I didn’t want to let my family down. And the most similar process to this that I’ve ever done in my life was Strictly and I was the first person out, and I was aware of that in my head.”

Last year, Ant and Dec demonstrated how the camp is covered when bad weather hits. Ant shared there was a big storm before adding “they don’t cover the camp, there is a canopy in the middle.” The presenter demonstrated with Dec’s bowl of beans pretending they were rain drops and used a paper plate as a prop canopy.

The canopy is above the camp and when it rains it will drip into camp from the canopy. The roof with allow celebrities to shelter from the heavy rain.

Fans of the ITV show took to the comments after finding out the show secret. One fan said: “Been wondering how they stay protected from the rain for years… now I’ve been answered!” Another added “Love the explanation, thank you.”
