London Fire Department urges holiday celebration safety

  • 25 November 2025

LONDON, Ky. (WYMT) – With Thanksgiving approaching on Thursday, the London Fire Department is reminding residents about safe cooking practices to prevent holiday fires.

Brandon Wagers with the London Fire Department says residents should test smoke alarms before cooking begins and keep fire extinguishers nearby. He recommends double-checking recipes and cook times to avoid overcooking.

“Make sure you read the labels. Following family recipes is great, but also double check yourself that way you don’t leave anything in the oven so it don’t overcook and such,” Wagers said.

Wagers emphasized the importance of not leaving cooking unattended, whether in the kitchen, grilling outside or deep frying.

“Make sure your smoke detectors are currently working well. Test them, not test them while they are going off while your cooking. But also make sure you have a fire extinguisher handy. Keep it nearby just in case for whatever you are cooking inside or outside,” he said.

For residents planning to put up Christmas lights, Wagers warns about the safety of extension cords and power strips.

“Make sure you don’t overload the power strips. Make sure you do have, if it is outdoor lighting or inflatable, in a waterproof case or connection and make sure you are using the right extension cords,” Wagers said.

He also advised caution with heated blankets during holiday movie watching.

“Don’t overwork them. Read the manufacturer’s and what they go by. If it is a heated blanket and it says don’t let it go past six hours, please don’t let it do that. Just follow the rules it is telling you to use, not just for the device, but for your safety as well,” he said.

The London Fire Department wants everyone to stay safe and enjoy the holidays.
