This is Music, a report by music industry umbrella body UK Music, asked artists, performers, writers and producers for their thoughts on artificial intelligence (AI) and AI generated music.
91% of all respondents believe consent should be sought before musical compositions and recordings are used to train AI models – going up to 94% among music writers.
Musicians and music creators want their rights protected
The report reveals:
- 92% respondents believe AI generated music should be labelled so fans know what they are listening to
- 93% believe AI companies should pay if they use musical compositions and recordings to train AI – going up to 95% for music writers and 94% for performers
- 95% want their voice and image rights protected.
The annual state of the music industry survey also revealed that UK music contributed a record £8 billion to the UK economy in the year before AI generated music topped the Billboard and Spotify charts.

The MU is calling on the Government to introduce legislation to protect musicians and creators, ensuring consent, fair remuneration, labelling and other key measures. We are also asking the Government to introduce personality and image rights.
