Greater Manchester has proudly celebrated many icons over the years, but few are as universally adored as PD Jax, the fearless and famously unflappable German Shepherd who has served the region with distinction.

After eight years keeping our communities safe, the much-loved police dog has officially retired, leaving behind a legacy that spans continents and a bond with his handler that could melt even the toughest heart.

Jax’s journey began in 2017 when he joined Greater Manchester Police as a spirited young puppy. Even then, trainers saw something special in him, a spark that hinted he might one day become one of the force’s greats. That instinct was right.

Over the years, Jax worked with several handlers across different units, proving himself invaluable on frontline patrols and as a firearm support dog. His calm precision and razor-sharp instincts made him a go-to partner for challenging incidents, while his gentle nature off-duty earned him a reputation as one of the most affectionate dogs on the force.

But it was during the last three years, under the partnership of Insp Weeden, that Jax truly cemented his status as a Manchester legend.

“He was perfect – you couldn’t ask for a better police dog.”

Insp Weeden reflects on their time together with unmistakable pride. “I knew from day one how special he was,” he says. “He was super confident, but the moment the job was done he’d become this calm, gentle, loving dog. He had everything you’d ever want in a working partner.”

And it wasn’t just his handler who noticed. Jax’s natural confidence made a powerful impression on the suspects he encountered. While he was involved in more than 50 arrests, many incidents required nothing more than Jax stepping out of the van. His mere presence, his stance, his focus, his readiness, often resulted in suspects surrendering immediately.

“There were so many occasions where we didn’t even need to deploy him,” Insp Weeden laughs. “People would take one look at him and decide it was best to give up. He prevented so many dangerous situations simply by being there.”

But what made Jax even more remarkable was his ability to effortlessly switch between life-saving work and total relaxation.

“Within minutes of detaining someone, he’d be in the back of the van sound asleep,” Insp Weeden recalls. “I’d look back and he’d be snoring. He was always so cool and composed.”

A father, a protector, and a global legacy

Jax’s service to Manchester didn’t end with his day-to-day work. Thanks to his exceptional mannerisms, intelligence, genetics, and temperament, he became an in-demand sire for police dog breeding programmes.

Two of his pups, PD Harley and PD Hully, are already active officers with GMP, proudly following in their father’s pawprints. Three more of his offspring are currently being raised within the force, and two of those are expected to become full operational police dogs in the future.

But his influence doesn’t stop at the Greater Manchester border.

Jax’s genetics have been shared with police forces across the UK and even as far away as New Zealand, where “Jax juniors” are now training to protect communities on the other side of the world. Advances in artificial fertility mean that GMP can continue the Jax bloodline long after his retirement, ensuring new generations of police pups benefit from his extraordinary traits.

A partnership that can’t be replaced

Retirement has brought mixed emotions for Insp Weeden. While he’s proud to see Jax enjoy a quieter life, he admits the change has been harder than expected.

“I’m happy he can relax now and put his feet up,” he says. “But every morning when I leave for work, I see the disappointment in his eyes. That’s the difficult part. We built a partnership that you can’t just switch off. The bond will never be broken.”

It’s a sentiment shared by everyone who worked with Jax. During his career he protected officers, saved colleagues in dangerous situations, and brought countless people to justice.

But once the day’s work was done, he became “quiet Jax” again, the gentle household companion who loved nothing more than a treat, a warm blanket, and a good nap

A well-earned retirement for a Manchester hero

These days, Jax is enjoying the slower pace of retirement life. Long walks, plenty of rest, and a growing pile of toys have replaced the high-pressure shifts he once took in stride. Though he occasionally casts a knowing look when Insp Weeden heads out the door without him, he’s settling comfortably into his new role as a family dog.

Manchester owes a debt of gratitude to dogs like Jax: brave and endlessly devoted. They operate quietly behind the scenes, keeping our streets safer and our communities stronger.

In recognition of his service, GMP and locals across Greater Manchester have been sending tributes, messages of thanks, and heartwarming stories of encounters with the beloved police dog.

Jax’s working days may be behind him, but his legacy is only growing through the officers he protected and through the countless lives he impacted with his courage and kindness.
