In 2020, British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) rescued an orphaned seal pup named Kale and brought her to RSPCA Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre. Kale was underweight and needed somewhere to grow and heal, and before long, she was healthy and thriving.

“She was initially tube fed and then hand fed fish until she was able to feed herself,” Lee Stewart, manager of RSPCA Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre, said in a press release. “When she put on weight, she was transferred to one of our outside pools to prepare her for life back in the sea.”

After her rehabilitation, Kale was released into the coastal waters off North Wales. Since she seemed to feel safe there, the seal decided to stay in the area. Last year, she was spotted in the wild, living her best life, and her rescuers were thrilled. This year, she was spotted again — and this time she had a huge surprise with her: a baby.

Kale was photographed in the wild, still thriving, only now she’s a mom. She was seen with her baby, named Amethyst, who is living her best life thanks to the care and support of her mom.

“This is such an uplifting story to hear that Kale has done so well back in the wild that she is now looking after her own pup,” Stewart said. “When she came into our care, she wasn’t in a great condition, but thanks to our dedicated team here and with support from Welsh Mountain Zoo, she made a great recovery.”

When rescuers release rehabilitated seals back into the wild, they’re confident that they’ve given them the tools they’ll need to survive. It’s not often, though, that they actually get such beautiful confirmation. Kale staying in the area and raising her own family there has given her rescuers a glimpse of how much their work truly matters, and for that, they are forever grateful.

“It’s moments like this that remind us just how vital our rescue and rehabilitation work is,” Stewart said.
