The rough weather doesn’t mean you have to stay couped up indoors – London has lots of walks that you can enjoy come rain or shine

As the air turns chillier and crisper, a brisk winter walk is a delightful way to spend your weekend. A breath of fresh air, a chance to greet a few dogs, and the promise of a hearty pub roast are all the makings of an ideal weekend – if you’re sceptical, just scroll through Hinge for five minutes.
And on London’s top winter walk, this is all within reach. According to Wanderlust, the prime spot for a winter stroll is Brockwell Park in South London.
Brockwell Park is a vast green expanse bordering Dulwich, Clapham, Brixton and more. It’s incredibly accessible – Herne Hill railway station is conveniently located at one entrance to the park – making it a lovely spot for a bit of exercise.
The park also houses the Grade II-listed Brockwell Hall, expansive meadows, an Old English flower garden and ancient oak trees, some of which have been standing for over 600 years. Brockwell Lido is another popular attraction – though perhaps not during the winter months.

All these features make the park a charming place for a walk, with plenty to see and do. There are ponds to amble past, and the old clocktower is also worth a glance.
And once you’ve had your fill of exercise, why not head over to The Half Moon in Herne Hill, which was named one of the best pubs in the UK in 2022. Located just opposite Herne Hill railway station, this pub is a local landmark that has stood on the spot since the 17th century.
Our correspondent Ellen Jenne paid a visit to the establishment and was captivated by its history-laden aesthetic, though during her Thursday afternoon trip, she felt it lacked the vibrant atmosphere of a bustling neighbourhood local.

She remarked: “Inside, the pub boasted a lot of lacquered wood, evidently trying to contain the building’s historic essence in every beam, arch and door frame possible. Maybe this is how they tried to physicalise their Grade II listed status, something not many pubs in the UK can say.”
This Fullers establishment welcomes dogs, making it a perfect destination following a brisk winter stroll with your four-legged companion.
The Sunday roasts have earned particular acclaim, with Tripadvisor reviewers awarding the cuisine five stars. One diner commented: “We went for a Sunday lunch as we live in the vicinity. Service was fast and friendly and our grandchildren were very happy with all they had ordered.
“Our roasts were excellent too. Done perfectly and the beer and the wine made it a very enjoyable family lunch. The restaurant has plenty of seating and the buzz and chatter was invigorating.”
