Scotland’s Economics Festival will be held at three venues in Leith from March 19 to 21, featuring 20 live talks.

The re-branded festival, run by Scotonomics, will include talks on a range of topics including the politics of austerity, community wealth, busting economic myths and the role of corporate power.

John T Harvey, American professor of economics who will speak on the opening night of the festival, said: “I am looking forward to coming to Adam Smith’s home and discussing economics the way he would have, with humility and a sharp focus on real-world issues and problems.”

The festival, which will feature paid-for talks and free Q&A drop-ins as well as book signings, will aim to take people “beyond the headlines” and empower Scots to ask bigger and better questions about economics.

Speakers from across the globe will include Professor Steve Keen, Professor Richard Murphy and Karen Gregory, and Dr Marion Lieutaud from the University of Edinburgh school of social and political science.

Previous versions of the festival have taken place in Dundee where a conference-style event was held, but in Edinburgh people will be able to choose individual sessions they’d like to attend.

Festival curator and political economist William Thomson said: “In a time of economic uncertainty and growing inequality, Scotland’s Economics Festival offers a space to step back, ask big questions, and hear big ideas from fresh perspectives.

“The festival is designed for anyone with an interest in community, economics, ecology, politics, or society and takes place only seven weeks before the 2026 Holyrood election.”

The event is being supported by progressive organisations from across the UK, including the David Graeber Institute, Future Economy Scotland, WEAll Scotland, and the Balanced Economy Project.

The venues involved include Leith Dockers Club, Round the World Studios and The Out of the Blue Drill Hall. There will also be the option of online access.
