The volunteer-run Weymouth and Portland station Air 107.2 announced in November it would cease to operate amid financial difficulties.
But the community has been rallying round since the news was announced with a former managing director returning and a vow to draw up a ‘renewed plan for long term stability’.
There are still debts owed however and a fundraiser has been set up so people can support the platform.
AIR 107.2 previously revealed that it would be forced to cease operation at the end of November, however this will no longer be the case as Carl Greenham has officially returned after 10 years, as Managing Director and Station Manager with immediate effect.
Mr Greenham’s return ‘aims to restore its core values, reinforce its identity and bring back the authentic vision that made AIR a much loved and trusted part of Weymouth’s community’.
AIR launched as a student project in 2011 at Westfield Arts College, with the name standing for ‘all inclusive radio’.
Over the years it has served as a hub for the community and was a platform for many aspiring media personalities to gain local experience.
However it was said that in recent years, multiple changes in leadership caused AIR to drift from its original direction.
In November, the then director, Marc Eyre, said the future ‘had been in the balance for a while’ as revenue from advertising had become increasingly difficult to secure.
The station was due to close yesterday but it’s been confirmed it will keep broadcasting and with Mr Greenham at the helm.
He said: “I’m back, and I’m ready. I’m truly overwhelmed by the messages and support we’ve seen.
“It’s clear that AIR 107.2 has a loyal following and remains a strong part of this community. I want to give my heartfelt thanks to every volunteer who has given their time, passion and energy. You’ve kept the station alive, and your continued support will be vital as we rebuild.
“A huge thank you to Marc for stepping up during a very challenging period and helping keep the station going. His commitment has been massively appreciated.”
It has also been announced that Jamie Lyones has been appointed as a director to support Mr Greenham. He will play ‘a vital role in developing the commercial side of the station as AIR 107.2 strengthens its business partnerships and advertising opportunities’.
All volunteers have been informed of the changes and ‘they have expressed their gratitude the station has been saved and they fully support the next chapter’.
Regular broadcasts will continue as normal throughout the transition. Subtle improvements will be introduced over time as part of the station’s ongoing development.
The station has now launched a JustGiving page to assist with clearing the remaining debts and securing AIR’s future.
Mr Greenham said: “Any donation, big or small, will help us keep AIR alive while we rebuild and move forward.”
