David Arquette has finally broken his silence on his unexpected Scream 7 return, saying: “That was a spoiler”.
Back in March, it was officially confirmed that Arquette would be reprising his role as Dewey Riley, despite the fact that his character was killed off in the fifth instalment.
Speaking to Us Weekly about the news, Arquette revealed that his return to the horror franchise was never meant to be public knowledge.
“I love playing the role of Dewey. I’ll always love playing the role of Dewey,” Arquette said. “So, any opportunity [to do it]. But that was a spoiler. It was supposed to be the surprise — and somebody leaked it. So I was kind of like, ‘Oh, that’s a bummer’.”
Meanwhile, dead characters Stu Macher (Matthew Lillard) and Roman Bridger (Scott Foley) are also set to make a comeback despite being killed off in the first and third film.

Asked how the characters might appear in the upcoming film, Arquette remained tight-lipped, saying: “I’m not really allowed to talk about it too much.”
Opening up about Scream 7’s director Kevin Williamson, who wrote the scripts for Scream, Scream 2 and Scream 4, Arquette said he was thrilled to work with him again.
“Working with Kevin Williamson as a director was tremendous,” Arquette said. “I mean, he is such an amazing person. I have the utmost respect for him.”

Arquette made his first appearance as police officer Dewey in the 1996 film Scream, where he was introduced as the older brother to Rose McGowan’s Tatum Riley.
Dewey met his untimely, and shocking, end in 2022’s Scream 5, where he was killed off by Mikey Madison’s Amber Freeman, who was one half of that film’s Ghostface duo alongside Jack Quaid’s Richie.
Scream 7 will be released in cinemas on 27 February 2026.
