December is dark and gloomy in the UK, with the only thing keeping many people going being the thought of Christmas. But for anyone who wants some sunshine before the big day, there is a seaside city in Europe that is ideal for a winter break. The weather stays warm, there is lots to do and flights from the UK are easy to find.
It is a popular choice for people who prefer shorter travel distances, and even in December, it offers sunny days and a lively atmosphere. The city in question is Funchal, the capital of the island of Madeira. It sits on the South coast of the island and is famous for its colourful streets, gardens and coastal views. The weather is one of the main reasons people choose it in winter.
According to TUI, temperatures in Funchal range from 15C to 20C in December. Days are mild and often reach the 20C mark. Rain is possible, but usually short-lived, and sunshine lasts for around five hours a day.
During the evenings temperature drops to around 15C, so a light jacket is enough.
As far as sightseeing is concerned, there is plenty to do in the city. The cable car from Funchal to Monte is one of the most popular attractions, offering views over the harbour and hills.
At the top, visitors can explore the Monte Palace Gardens, which are filled with plants, ponds and walkways.
Many people also take the wicker toboggan ride back down the hill, which is a traditional Madeiran activity.
Funchal’s old town is another highlight. It has narrow streets, painted doors, local restaurants and small shops.
The Mercado dos Lavradores is a good place to see daily life, with stalls selling fruit, fish, flowers and spices. The waterfront and cathedral are also easy to visit on foot.
Reviews for Funchal are very positive. One person said on TripAdvisor: “We’ve been to Madeira twice now, and booked again for December.
“I’d definitely recommend staying in Funchal, it’s a lovely city, We’ve never felt it was crowded, just easy going, lots to see and do.”
Another added: “We went to Funchal last December and it was amazing. We used to go to Spain or Greece at this time of year, but Madeira is much better. It’s warm and not crowded with plenty of things to do.”
A third wrote: “Funchal is probably the best place you can visit in winter. It stays warm and the vibe is great. It’s also the perfect base to explore the rest of the magnificent island.”
Madeira is famous for its mountains, forests, coastal paths and natural pools.
Popular trips include hiking the levada trails, visiting Pico do Arieiro for mountain views, walking through the Laurisilva Forest and swimming in volcanic pools.
