The Balearics reached a population of 1,249,844 inhabitants on 1 January 2025, a figure that represents an increase of 1.46% in one year, the second highest among the autonomous communities, only behind the Valencian Community. According to the “Annual Population Census” with the first results for 2025, published on Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), there are 622,673 men and 613,910 women in the Balearics.
Ibiza is the ninth municipality in Spain with the highest population growth in the last year, with an increase of 2.6% to 54,628 residents. By island, Mallorca has reached 971,068 inhabitants, an increase of 1.4%; Ibiza has 164,265, an increase of 1.7%; Menorca has 102,821 inhabitants, an increase of 1.7%; and Formentera has 11,690, an increase of 1.8%.
Of the 67 municipalities in the Balearics, only Palma has more than 100,000 inhabitants. It has reached 443,196 residents, 1.1% more than last year. Only two other municipalities have more than 50,000 inhabitants: Ibiza (with 54,628) and Calvia with 54,082, an increase of 0.4% in the last year.
The next largest municipalities are Manacor with 49,275, Santa Eulària des Riu with 42,496, Llucmajor with 40,450, Marratxí with 40,434, Inca with 36,076, Ciutadella de Menorca with 32,719, Mahón with 30,986, and Sant Josep de sa Talaia with 30,703.
Of the 67 municipalities in the Balearics, there are only 6 where the population has decreased: Banyalbufar has lost 2 residents and now has 578 (-0.3%), Escorca has decreased by 6, with 199 (-2.9%), Estellencs 5 and now has 374 (-1.4%), the population of Mancor de la Vall has decreased by 13 residents, to 1,691 (-0.8%), Porreres by 20, to 5,871 (-0.3%) and Sant Llorenç des Cardassar by 20, with 9,479 inhabitants (-0.2%).
Of the total resident population in the Balearics, 891,424 were born in Spain (71.3%) and 358,320 abroad (28.6%). The countries of origin of the nationalities with the most residents in the Balearics are Colombia, with 41,900; Argentina, with 38,485; and Morocco, with 34,243. These are followed by Germany, with 21,723, the United Kingdom with 18,374, and Ecuador with 18,012.
Spain’s population increased by 508,602 inhabitants during 2024, reaching a new high of 49,128,297 on 1 January 2025. This increase was mainly due to foreigners, whose number grew by 409,689 (+6.3%) to a record 6,911,971. The number of Spanish nationals increased by 0.2%. In terms of population structure, the relative weight of those over 64 was 20.7%. This meant that the dependency ratio – the ratio between the population over 64 and that between 16 and 64 – stood at 0.32.
The average age is 44.6 years, confirming the ageing trend that began at least six decades ago. In 1975, the average age of the population was 33; in 1985, it was 35; in 1995, it was 38; in 2005, it was 40.3; and in 2015, it was 42.5. As for the foreign population, the most numerous are Moroccans (968,999), Colombians (676,534) and Romanians (609,270).
Among the main nationalities, the largest population increases during 2024 were among citizens of Colombia (98,057 more), Venezuela (52,555) and Morocco (48,306). Meanwhile, the largest decreases were recorded among those from Romania (-11,193), Ukraine (-7,907) and the United Kingdom (-5,940). In relative terms, and among the nationalities with the highest number of foreigners, the largest increases were recorded among citizens of Peru (18.6%), Colombia (17.0%) and Venezuela (16.2%). Meanwhile, Ukraine (-3.8%), Bulgaria (-2.9%) and the United Kingdom (-2.2%) saw the largest decreases.
