South London is getting a bumper package of railway engineering works as a Christmas present, including Brixton (National Rail) Denmark Hill and Herne Hill stations being without trains for five days.
From 27th to 31st December, there will be no trains at Brixton (National Rail / Southeastern), Denmark Hill, Herne Hill or West Dulwich stations.

Southeastern services on the Victoria – Brixton – Bromley South – Orpington line and the Victoria – Denmark Hill – Lewisham – Dartford line will not run, and the Overground Windrush Line will not run between Clapham Junction and Surrey Quays.
There will also be no trains at Elephant and Castle or Loughborough Junction stations between 27th and 31st December, as there will be no Thameslink trains between Blackfriars and Bellingham or Blackfriars and Sutton.
Then between 1st and 4th January, there will be no Southern trains between London Bridge and Tulse Hill via Peckham Rye, with no trains at East Dulwich or North Dulwich.
South Western Railway lines in to Waterloo via Vauxhall and Clapham Junction also have major engineering work from 27th December to 4th January, with Waterloo Station closed on 27th and 28th December, Queenstown Road closed through this work, and Vauxhall closed most days.
There will be an altered / reduced service from 29 December to 4 January.
This is for a major track replacement project around Queenstown Road Station.
After New Year, Charing Cross and Waterloo East will be closed from 1 to 4 January, with Cannon Street closed as well on 1 and 4 January, and trains in South East London will be diverted or cancelled.
For all of these, there is a mix of rail replacement buses and ticket acceptance on TFL bus and Underground services – see individual train companies’ websites for more information.
Away from London, major railway closures over the holiday period include the West Coast Main Line between Milton Keynes and Northampton / Rugby, lines from Liverpool Street in to Essex and East Anglia, and lines around Cambridge.

Christmas Day & Boxing Day
Almost all of London’s public transport services will be closed on Christmas Day, most national rail lines will be closed on Boxing Day, and there will be altered services across the Christmas and New Year period – we will have more information on these when details are available.
Note: This information is provided in good faith from information available at the beginning of December 2025 from Network Rail and Train Companies’ public websites, but we would advise checking any journey plans with National Rail Enquiries or the TfL Journey Planner.
