A woman is in a critical condition after falling from a bridge in Bury. Emergency services were called out to Burrs Country Park at around 6.30am today (December 3).
Greater Manchester Police says it was called out to concerns for a woman’s welfare after she was seen on the ‘wrong side of the bridge’. The force says she went on to fall into the River Irwell.
She is now in a critical condition in hospital following the incident, GMP says. An investigation has been launched, although police do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident.
Forensics investigators have been seen in attendance at Burrs Country Park this morning. Firefighters and paramedics also attended the scene.
A GMP spokesperson said: “At around 6:30am this morning (December 3), we were called to a concern for welfare where a woman was reported on the wrong side of the bridge at Burrs Country Park, Bury and subsequently fell into the River Irwell. She is in a critical condition and has been taken to hospital where she is being treated for her injuries.

“There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident. We are appealing for anyone with any information to come forward. This includes any witnesses, CCTV or dashcam footage.”
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service says two fire crews attended the scene at 6.45am for around 35 minutes ‘to assist with a person rescue’. A North West Ambulance Service spokesperson added: “A woman was taken to hospital in [a] serious condition after falling from a bridge.”
