Liverpool fans remain convinced Arne Slot is not using Federico Chiesa often enough, after the Italian’s vital cameo – at the other end of the pitch – against Sunderland.
Chiesa brought his tally of minutes in this season’s Premier League to 143 with four more in normal time during Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Sunderland.
While he replaced Alexander Isak with a view to clinching a late winner, his most telling impact came with a dramatic block to deny Wilson Isidor a goal as the visitors countered.
That it was down to Chiesa to charge back and ensure Liverpool held onto a point left the Mail‘s Dominic King “staggered.”
It’s wild watching Liverpool play the latter stages of games with the abandon of a team that’s a goal down in a Champions League semi-final with time running out. Federico Chiesa being last man, without another red shirt in 50 yards, was staggering. That clearance could be huge

King was not the only onlooker left baffled by Chiesa’s treatment by Arne Slot, either, with the No. 14 still yet to start in the Premier League or Champions League despite being this season’s fifth-most reliable source of goals.
Liverpool fans criticise Arne Slot over Chiesa’s role
We didn’t deserve Chiesa tonight. Barely gets a kick and then when he does runs his nuts off to make sure the embarrassment doesn’t get worse!
We will never know but he might’ve helped keep the fella who won’t play him in a job there ? https://t.co/DlVbcHQ8zN

Chiesa has played 139 minutes in the league this season and got the winner vs Bournemouth, equaliser vs Palace, assisted the equaliser vs United, and saved us with a goal line clearance there. I just don’t get it. Play him.

Can’t fathom why Chiesa spends so much time sat on that Liverpool bench – a team performance crying out for his kind of energy, inventiveness and unpredictability #LIVSUN

Chiesa has shown more fight than them all put together this season, and yet every week he gets treated like a numpty, getting 10 minutes here and there. It’s a joke how he’s been treated.

Players who show more fight and intensity should be playing more minutes, even if it’s off the bench earlier. Chiesa, Ekitike, Jones etc. bring different energy to the lethargy and slow tempo we saw for most of game.

There’s a lot of questions that can be pointed at the manager this season, but none more glaring than his treatment of Chiesa. Attitude and application spot on every time he plays, yet still barely gets a look in. #LFC

Still thinking about the work ethic of Federico Chiesa. Gives his all every single time he steps on the pitch.

Chiesa deserves so much more credit for his time at Liverpool. We barely see him consistently and when we do, he’s always giving 100%. It’s a shame really

Slot watches Chiesa track back like that but still decides to never start him

Mate you’ve got to be starting Chiesa. The bloke is all over the place in the best possible way. Was our only centre back, then played goalie, 30 seconds later was on the edge of the box ready to score a screamer. He’s unreal.

Chiesa just saved us from complete embarrassment and you still know that Slot won’t recognise his existence and will continue to persist with Gakpo.

Just a Federico Chiesa appreciation post.
He’s never given the credit he deserves by Arne Slot, but whenever he’s on the pitch, he makes a difference.
Goals, assists and tonight a heroic goal-line clearance.
Deserves so much more minutes. pic.twitter.com/8V1b1Cv8nK

Chiesa’s absence from the side comes while Mohamed Salah‘s starting spot is in question for the first time since joining from AS Roma in 2017.
The Egyptian was left out of back-to-back games but then brought on at the break for the wholly ineffective Cody Gakpo, who himself appears to have no competition for his place on the left.
Given the clear lack of incentive when it comes to meaningful starts, it would be easy to forgive Chiesa for not applying himself as relentlessly as he does.
But he continues to step up in key moments like his crucial block on Wednesday, which surely deserves more than he is getting in terms of opportunities.
