Sheffield Wednesday are going to have to ride out this season with the club currently in the midst of a takeover at Hillsborough.

The Owls are on -10 points after the EFL took another six points off the South Yorkshire-based outfit earlier this week.

One positive of the turbulent campaign is that Henrik Pedersen can start to unearth some of the club’s emerging talents from the youth team.

Following last night’s game against Northern Premier Division outfit Stocksbridge Park Steels, one of the Wednesday academy gems has given the head coach some food for thought.

Thornton has made a couple of outings in the Championship this season against Coventry and Millwall but largely he’s been an unused substitute.

Last night he was back with the under-21s as Wednesday played Stocksbridge and the Owls went through 4-3 on penalties after a 3-3 draw.

Thornton flexed his quality with a scrumptious goal from distance which the best of goalkeepers might have struggled with, curling home from way outside the penalty area.

As a result, that sprinkling of star dust in those areas of the pitch might be just what Wednesday need in order to start winning a few matches before the season is out.

Wednesday have nothing to lose by playing Thornton

At 19-years-old, Thornton should be ready for playing more minutes against men and ultimately, the Owls have nothing to lose by throwing him in.

Clearly, Thornton has a bit of sparkle about him and he could definitely be beneficial to Pedersen’s plans between now and the end of the season.

Wednesday have to grab every ounce of positivity they can for the remainder of the current campaign and the club’s academy players can help with that.

Thornton’s latest strike deserves plaudits and now, it will be interesting to see if Pedersen does give him a few stars in the Wednesday midfield.
