Scotland’s busiest airport took to social media to say that no flights are currently operating due to an issue with air traffic control.

Flights out of Edinburgh Airport have now resumed after they were grounded this morning due to a major IT outage.

Scotland’s busiest airport announced at 9.30am that no flights were operating due to an issue with air traffic control operator, Air Navigations Solutions.

The outage caused chaos for passengers with flights diverted to other parts of the UK and others reported being stuck on the tarmac for hours.

Edinburgh Airport has said that teams were working to resolve the issue as soon as possible and have now confirmed that flights have resumed.

Air Navigations Solutions thanked everyone for their patience.

Departure boards for flights continued to tell passengers to “go to gate” during the grounding. While some easyJet flights were cancelled. A number of flights due to arrive in Edinburgh have been diverted and cancelled. Others are delayed.

Turkish Airlines flight TK1343 from Istanbul was due to arrive at 10am into the Scottish capital but has been diverted to Manchester, according to Flightradar 24.

Ryanair flight RK596 from Stansted has now arrived at Glasgow Prestwick Airport.

An Aer Lingus plane to Dublin which had been stuck since 9am left at 10.41am, while a United airlines flight to Newark NYC left at 10.39am – an hour and 14 minutes after it was due.

A spokesman for Edinburgh Airport said: “Flights at Edinburgh Airport have now resumed following the IT issue with ANS, our air traffic control provider.

“We thank passengers for their patience and understanding.”

Passengers reported being stuck on planes on the tarmac in Edinburgh with no indication of how long they’d be waiting.

Gerry McCormick said: “My daughter is sitting on an easyJet plane waiting for departure. Was due away at 7am, still waiting.”

Carol Bullions Mcalpine added: “We are on plane waiting to take off. They can’t give any indication of waiting time.”

Paul Rayner posted: “Currently watching my pal from Gatwick go further away from Edinburgh.”

Business travel company Clarity has said that flight disruptions “may continue” after the IT issue is resolved as the airlines “deal with residual backlogs”.

It wrote on X: “#Clarity advise travellers flying to, from or through #EdinburghAirport to confirm their #flight status prior to departure and allow additional time to process through the airport.”

Air Navigations Solutions (ANSL) spokesperson: “This morning a technical issue affected one of our systems at Edinburgh Airport and it impacted flight operations.

“Our technical capability has now been reinstated and flights have since resumed.

“Safety is our number one priority, and our engineers worked at pace to restore system capability as quickly as possible.

“We regret the inconvenience that this is causing and thank everyone for their patience.”
