LONDON

The leader of the UK’s Liberal Democrats party on Monday accused US President Donald Trump of wanting to sell out Ukraine and the rest of Europe, warning that this could not be allowed to happen.

“Donald Trump is a Kremlin stooge who wants to sell out Ukraine and the rest of Europe to Putin,” Ed Davey wrote on US social media company X, sharing a screenshot of Anadolu’s report titled, “Kremlin says US national security strategy document ‘largely consistent’ with Russia’s vision.”

“We can’t let that happen,” warned Davey.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in an interview on Sunday that “the adjustments” they are seeing are “largely consistent with” Russia’s vision.

Peskov also expressed Moscow’s hope that this could be a “modest guarantee” that they will be able to continue working together constructively to find a settlement in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrats leader also said Prime Minister Keir Starmer should seize frozen Russian assets in Britain and should convince German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron to do the same, as both leaders are visiting London on Monday for talks with Starmer and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss the US peace plan.

Davey’s remarks came amid increasing reactions to statements from US officials recently on Ukraine as well as Europe.

Earlier Monday, European Council President Antonio Costa called on the US to respect the bloc’s domestic political life and democratic choices, while Germany lambasted the new US national security strategy for what it called its “critical tones against the EU.”

The European Council president’s remarks came after Washington unveiled a National Security Strategy on early Friday, marking a significant departure from previous US policy and codifying President Donald Trump’s months-long criticism of Europe.

In addition, Trump said earlier Sunday that he is “a little bit disappointed” that Zelenskyy has not yet read the latest peace proposal for ending the Russia-Ukraine war.
