In a surprising outcome that has resonated across Spain’s apicultural community, Mel Sa Font honey from Santa María del Camí, Mallorca, was named Best Honey of Spain 2025. The announcement was made during the XI edition of the Mieladictos national competition, where the honey prevailed over more than 140 entries from across the country.

The award celebrates artisanal excellence, highlighting products that demonstrate distinctive flavour, aroma, and production quality. Mel Sa Font, a monofloral honey derived from carob trees (algarrobo), impressed judges with its dark colour, intense aroma, and balanced bittersweet-toasted flavour. Its recognition signals that exceptional honey is not limited to mainland Spain but can also come from Mallorca’s Mediterranean environment.

The Producer: From Blacksmith to Beekeeper
A Dramatic Career Shift

Tomeu Fullana Ferrer, the producer behind Mel Sa Font, has an unconventional background. Until 2018, Fullana worked as a blacksmith. A chance encounter with apiculture inspired him to undertake beekeeping training courses, ultimately leading him to leave the forge and commit full-time to honey production.

Fullana’s approach is entirely artisanal and monofloral. His hives are managed under organic and sustainable principles, minimising intervention and avoiding additives. Seasonal cycles are strictly observed, ensuring the natural characteristics of the carob blossoms are captured in the honey. This commitment to quality and environmental stewardship was cited as a decisive factor in the national award.

Impact on Mallorca’s Rural Economy and Heritage
Preserving Tradition and Biodiversity

The success of Mel Sa Font highlights the broader significance of small-scale honey production in Mallorca. Beekeeping preserves traditional knowledge, supports biodiversity, and contributes to the local economy through direct sales at markets, such as the weekly Santa María del Camí market, and through agri-tourism.

Monofloral carob honey reinforces Mallorca’s agricultural identity, demonstrating that the island’s flora and climate can produce products of national calibre. It also encourages sustainable livelihoods, showing that careful stewardship of land and natural resources can coexist with economic development.
