Europe’s largest natural gas consumer, Germany, is struggling to balance high energy prices, sufficient natural gas supplies and falling industrial gas demand in the wake of the energy crisis sparked by the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Bernhard Klutting, director-general for economic stabilization, energy security and gas and hydrogen infrastructure at Germany’s economic affairs ministry, spoke to Energy Intelligence on the sidelines of the World LNG Summit held in Istanbul last week about the country’s winter gas outlook and the future of its power plant strategy.
