Kim Hellberg is hoping Riley McGree’s injury is not a serious one, after the Middlesbrough star was forced off injured at Bristol City.
McGree appeared to pull up in around the 15th minute of the match as he skipped past a Bristol City player with the ball. But he was knocked slightly off balance in doing so and immediately appeared to feel his hamstring as he laid the ball off.
After treatment, McGree was forced off and, after a strong run following his injury hell over the last two-and-a-half years, he looked understandably distraught.
It compounded a frustrating day for Boro, who lost 2-0 as their Ashton Gate curse continued. Without a win at Bristol City since 2020, this was Hellberg’s first loss as Boro boss.
But providing a hopeful update after speaking with the Australian star at the interval, the Boro head coach said: “I actually don’t know yet. I think it’s not too dangerous, but I don’t have a good answer for you yet. We will see.
“I just spoke to him at half time a little bit and hopefully it isn’t too serious. Riley is an unbelievable player for us. It’s a tough blow, but we have such a big squad and a lot of good players.
“So we just keep going and hopefully he is back soon. He didn’t think it was such a big thing at half-time. He’s a good person as well as a player that we need in the squad.”
The hope will be that the injury does not prove to be a serious one. McGree has had to endure two and half years of injury hell.
Having worked extensively in recent months ahead of his return to strengthen muscles in his legs to try and build more resistance, McGree had returned to action in fine form.
