PLANS have been submitted to open a Black Sheep Coffee near the National Museum of Scotland.

The proposed site is currently occupied by East Asian supermarket Maycheelin, which stands on the corner of Forrest Road and Lauriston Place.

It would be the 12th Black Sheep Coffee in Edinburgh, which includes one at Edinburgh Airport

Concern has risen among the population about the impact of chain branches on local, independent shops.

There are currently six Black Sheep Coffee stores within a half-mile radius of areas surrounding Princes Street.

Coffeehouse chain giants Starbucks and Costa currently own approximately 20 stores each across the city, while competitor Caffe Nero has 12 stores open.

The new Black Sheep Coffee store would only be an 11-minute to its sister branch on North Bridge, according to Google Maps, and only a 13-minute walk to its Lothian Road branch.

The proposal on the council’s website includes a request for the store’s sign to be powered by “cool white 6000K LEDs housed within letters to provide static rear halo illumination back onto fascia”.

Designs include the new store being on two floors, with the ground floor being the main retail area while the basement would be primarily used as storage and customer toilets.

External seating would also be available for customers to sit outside.

It is currently unknown when the new store would open.
