The Met Office is forecasting a bright but chilly Boxing Day, with settled conditions bringing plenty of sunshine and cold temperatures across Merseyside. This evening and tonight, cloud will linger over the Pennines, but clearer skies are expected to develop overnight. Winds will gradually ease, although gusty conditions will persist over higher ground.

It will be a cold night, with temperatures dipping to around 0C and a patchy air frost possible in places. On Friday December 26, Boxing Day, high pressure will keep conditions settled and largely clear skies will allow for prolonged spells of sunshine throughout the day.

It will remain breezy at times, particularly over hills where strong gusts are likely. Despite the sunshine, it will feel cold, with daytime temperatures reaching a maximum of around 6C.

Frost is expected to form overnight as temperatures fall again. Looking ahead to Saturday through Monday, conditions will turn increasingly cloudy from Saturday.

The Met Office said: “Turning increasingly cloudy from Saturday with the odd spot of light rain and drizzle over the weekend, though some brighter breaks remain possible.

“Often breezy, causing it to feel colder.”

Elsewhere in the UK, a yellow wind warning was issued for today, Christmas Day, for parts of Wales and the South West of England. This will be lifted at 11.59pm this evening.

Looking ahead to next week, the weather agency added: “High pressure is likely to dominate across the UK through to the end of the year, centred to the west or northwest over the North Atlantic.

“This will likely maintain relatively settled conditions at first, but with a little light rain or drizzle in places and a few showers possible along some coasts exposed to the northerly wind.

“Around the turn of the year, high pressure is likely to shift a little farther away from the UK, allowing a greater chance of more changeable conditions to develop.

“This will bring an increased risk of some rain or showers at times which, with cold air close to the UK, may bring some wintry hazards to some places. Temperatures will probably be near or slightly below average for this period overall.”
