Whether it’s a Boxing Day walk to blow away the cobwebs or a winter stroll with family and friends, many people will be heading outdoors across Wales this week.
From frosty fields to coastal paths, Wales offers beautiful scenery that can be safely enjoyed in the colder months — and Natural Resources Wales (NRW) is reminding walkers to follow the Countryside Code when they do.
Here are ten festive tips for making the most of winter walks while protecting wildlife and local communities.
Plan your adventure carefully.
Check your route, weather and local conditions before setting off. Winter weather in Wales can change quickly, so plan ahead, download maps for offline use and avoid swollen rivers or slippery banks after rain.
Take your litter home.
Bring a bag for rubbish and food waste, including sandwich wrappers and packaging. Litter spoils the countryside and can harm wildlife and livestock.
Be nice, say hello, share the space.
A friendly greeting or “shwmae” helps everyone enjoy the outdoors. The Countryside Code encourages respect and connection between visitors and residents.
Be considerate of those living and working in the countryside.
Farmers and landowners often work through the holidays. Respect people, livestock and property.
Leave gates and property as you find them.
Close gates if they were closed, and leave them open if that’s how you found them. This helps keep animals safe and ensures farm access.
Follow local signs and marked paths.
Stick to public footpaths and respect waymarkers such as the acorn symbol, which identifies National Trails.
Do not block gateways or access points when parking.
Park only in safe, designated areas and keep entrances clear for farm vehicles and emergency access.
Care for nature and avoid damage.
Leave rocks, plants and trees as you find them — and resist taking festive holly or mistletoe from the countryside.
Keep dogs under control and in sight.
Avoid disturbing wildlife or livestock, and don’t allow dogs to chase overwintering birds on the coast.
Bag and bin dog waste.
Dog waste can spread disease and harm animals. Use any public bin or take it home for disposal.
NRW says these simple steps help everyone enjoy Wales’ landscapes responsibly while keeping communities, wildlife and livestock safe.
