A horror film described by fans as ‘diabolically chilling’ and as clever as The Blair Witch Project is airing on Film 4 tonight.
Late Night with the devil was released in 2023 and stars David Dastmalchian as lead character, Jack Delroy, an American late night talk show host to rival Johnny Carson. His show, Night Owls, is a favourite of those struggling to sleep across the USA. But Jack’s ratings have seriously dropped since the death of Jack’s devoted wife, Madeleine from cancer, so the host comes up with a daring idea to inject some life back into the show.
On Halloween 1977 he plans a special like none that have come before as he prepares to unleash evil directly into the homes of unsuspecting Americans. Shot as if it’s a documentary about talk shows, the films unsettles viewers right from the start. Critics heaped praise on the film, hailing it “deliciously dark” and “devillishly funny” and it holds a near perfect 97 percent approval rating on the movie review aggregator site, Rotten Tomatoes.

One critic said: “[Late Night with the Devil] evolves the legacy of the horror classics before it, pushing the genre to exciting new heights–as well as elevating David Dastmalchian to the leading man status he more than deserves.” Another wrote: “It’s sharp little horror film, and if I look askance at all the ‘best horror movie of 2024’ talk, it’s only because the year isn’t even half over. … [A] spot-on recreation of both the look and the gonzo attitude of the 1970s…[i]t’s clever and it’s fun.”
Dastmalchian’s eerie performance as troubled talk show host, Jack, came in for special praise, with one critic saying: “A creepy (and gorgeous) film packed with amazing performances led by David Dastmalchian. It gets under the skin as it sprints towards its mind-bending conclusion.”

Another said: “Perfection in every way.” While a third added: “This film surpassed the expectations of a low-budget indie film made for streaming. The attention to detail, down to the way the film sounded and looked, replicated the time period. David Dastmalchian delivered a compelling yet disturbing performance that no one was prepared for.”
