The winger made a shock departure from Portman Road on deadline day after recovering from an Achilles injury that ruled him out for most of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign.

Having featured for the Blues in games against Birmingham City, Bromley (Carabao Cup) and Southampton, he moved up to the Steel City to join the Blades, who were managed by Ruben Selles.

Selles was sacked in September after a 5-0 thrashing by Town, although it didn’t impact Ogbene’s game time in the short term. However, he has been sidelined since picking up a hamstring injury in the Republic of Ireland’s 3-2 win against Hungary in World Cup qualifying.

As a result, Alan Nixon has reported that Ogbene is not in Wilder’s plans for the remainder of the season, although there is no recall clause in his current loan agreement, so it would require the two clubs both deciding that terminating the deal would be best.

Nixon adds that ‘it would take another club making an offer for the Irishman’ for him to leave Bramall Lane, although he is unable to play for anyone other than Ipswich or Sheffield United.

Ex-Blue Louie Barry is in a similar position in South Yorkshire, but he has not played for parent club Aston Villa this season, so he can be recalled and sent out on loan again.

The January transfer window opens next Thursday (January 1st).
