The January transfer window is less than a week away and Leeds United seem intent on adding more attacking reinforcements, despite the club’s PSR position.

On Sunday afternoon, Leeds take to the pitch for the final time in 2025 with an away game at Sunderland. By the time they play again, the window will have opened, with Leeds facing Liverpool on New Year’s Day.

Having failed to sign Harry Wilson at the end of the summer window and with Dan James now expected to be injured for a large chunk of 2026, Leeds are expected to try and target a playmaker or a no.10.

Fabrizio Romano says Leeds have seen an approach rejected for Como’s Martin Baturina, but it is that kind of player Leeds supposedly want. Wilson has hinted he could be open to a Fulham exit in January.

Leeds have already tried to sign a handful of Forest players. Igor Jesus was a target for Leeds in the summer, while Dilane Bakwa chose Forest. Leeds even made a £17m bid for striker Arnaud Kalimuendo.

Now, The Mail say Leeds are among five Premier League clubs keen on Forest’s England U21 captain James McAtee. It comes after Forest’s £30m summer signing has only managed to play in 10 matches.

Leeds were among the clubs interested in McAtee in the summer, but were overpowered by a Forest side competing in the Europa League. Chelsea, Bournemouth, Fulham and Sunderland also want McAtee.

It is believed that Forest rate McAtee highly and want to keep him, but the player could well push himself out of the door come the January window. It is unclear how much Forest would want for his services.

What Angus Kinnear said about James McAtee in 2024

Even before the summer window just gone, Leeds have held an interest in the pocket-sized playmaker. While in the Championship, Angus Kinnear confirmed Leeds had enquired about McAtee at Man City.

But Pep Guardiola rejected a move for the attacker: “The level we were looking at, McAtee at Man City. There was talk he might be released all through the window, but then Pepe decided to keep him.”

Now, the intent is clearly there, and Leeds want to supply Farke with the tools they feel are necessary to keep Leeds in the Premier League. A source of creation, magic out of nothing, a no.10 type player is key.

Leeds simply do not have one of those. Brenden Aaronson is the closest thing to it, but ultimately, he doesn’t have the skill to create in the same way Wilson or McAtee do. The latter would be superb.
