The return of the popular scheme, which has been in place since 2016, comes as operator Edinburgh Trams has announced a series of festive road closures.

Beginning at 6 pm on 30 December, the tramway will close at Princes Street and St Andrew Square due to preparations for the annual street party.

Trams will operate a split service between Edinburgh Airport and the West End, as well as between Newhaven and Picardy Place.

The thoroughfare is expected to reopen on the morning of 1 January.

Sarah Singh, head of service delivery at Edinburgh Trams, said: “Free all-night trams have proven to be a hit with Hogmanay partygoers in previous years, and we’re delighted to be able to run them again for everyone to make their way across the city and beyond.

“Whether you’re calling it a night and heading home after the bells or you’re keeping the party going all night long, we’ll be there to help you get to where you need to be.”

A series of festive events are set to take place during Hogmanay in Scotland’s capital, including a candlelit concert at St. Giles’ Cathedral, a rocking ceilidh at the Assembly Rooms on George Street, and a performance from Wet Leg on the Princes Street Gardens stage.

Revellers will take to the streets to celebrate the New Year with street performances, food stalls, live music, and fireworks.

Following the disappointment of last year’s Hogmanay, when most major events were cancelled due to fears of poor weather, merrymakers will no doubt enjoy the festivities even more.
