A police officer was seriously injured after being bitten on the arm during an incident at a city centre restaurant. Merseyside Police said they were called to Burger and Sauce on Ranelagh Street shortly before 2.15am on Friday, December 26, following reports that a man had been aggressive towards security staff.
Officers attended the scene and arrested a man on suspicion of assault. During the arrest, the suspect reportedly attacked a police officer, causing serious bite injuries to her arm. The officer was taken to hospital for treatment and is now recovering at home.
Johny Opoku, 28, of Hatton Garden in Liverpool, has been charged with robbery and section 18 wounding with intent to resist arrest.
He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Liverpool Crown Court on Monday, January 26.
Assistant Chief Constable Jennifer Wilson said: “To attack a police officer or member of staff when they are just doing their job and protecting others is absolutely despicable.
“Officers put themselves in harm’s way to protect the public from people intent on causing harm in our communities.
“They go to work each day knowing that they might have to step into a situation that most people would run away from, but it will never be acceptable to use violence, aggression or abuse towards officers.
“When members of the public cross that line, they can expect to face justice for their actions.”
