A 19-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving

Two people were airlifted to hospital following a collision which left a major valleys route closed for over 20 hours. A total of five people were taken to hospital after emergency services were called to the scene multi-vehicle crash on the A4119 bypass at Williamstown, near Tonypandy, Rhondda shortly before 11.25am on Monday morning.

One person is in a life threatening condition in hospital, while another has suffered life-changing injuries, according to police. The road remained closed until Tuesday morning while collision investigation work was ongoing.

A spokeswoman for the force confirmed a 19-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving following the collision.

The Welsh Ambulance Service confirmed it sent six emergency ambulances as well as a number of other units to the scene.

Advanced critical care was delivered to the casualties in two Wales Air Ambulance helicopters.

A statement from South Wales Police said: “Just before 11.25am on Monday morning, December 29, we received reports of a multiple vehicle collision on the A4119 bypass at Williamstown, Tonypandy. Officers from our Roads Policing Unit (RPU) promptly attended the scene.

“A total of five people were transported to hospital for treatment.

“Among them one casualty has sustained injuries described as life-threatening; another casualty has injuries described as life-changing with the remaining casualties having injuries that are not classified as life-threatening or life-changing.

“A 19-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He is also being treated for injuries that are believed to be neither life-threatening nor life changing.

“The scene was preserved for investigation, and the road remained closed for several hours to facilitate ongoing inquiries.”

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called on Monday at approximately 11.28am, to reports of a multi vehicle road traffic collision on the A4119 bypass near Williamstown.

“We sent six emergency ambulances, two Cymru High Acuity Response Units, a hazardous area response team, two operations managers and pre-hospital immediate care specialists from MEDSERVE Wales to the scene.

“Advanced critical care support was delivered by the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service in two Wales Air Ambulance charity helicopters.”
